9.2 Add Student Legal Name (SEVIS)

Purpose: Use this document as a reference for adding additional name types in ctcLink.

Audience: College staff responsible for maintaining student SEVIS information.

A person record must exist for the individual receiving the name modification in order to proceed with this process. See QRG: 9.2 Adding Applications Manually.

 Navigation: NavBar > Navigator > Campus Community > SEVIS > Personal Information > Add/Update a Person

  1. The Add/Update a Person search page displays.
  2. Enter Search Criteria to identify your student.
  3. Check the Include History option.
  4. Select the Search button.
Add Update a Person Page
  1. The Add/Update a Person page displays.
  2. Select the Names link.
Select Names link
  1. Current Names will be listed for the student at the top.
  2. Select “Legal” name type in the Type of Name drop-down menu. 
  3. Effective Date will default to today’s date. 
  4. Ensure Status is “Active.”
  5. Enter the student’s Legal name according to SEVIS name standards utilizing Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) information:
    • Prefix (if applicable - can be left blank)
    • First name (required - if student does not have a first name, enter a hyphen “-“
    • Middle name (if applicable) 
    • Last name (required)
    • Suffix (if applicable  can be left blank)
  6. Select Submit.
Select Legal as the Type of Name
  1. The “Legal” name type will now display under Current Names.
  2.  Verify information is correct.
  3.  Select “OK.”
Legal Name will display under current Name
  1. The main Add/Update a Person page displays.
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Save” to save changes.
Select Save
  1. The process to Add Student Legal Name is now complete.
  2. End of procedure.
